Durango Chamber Launches Scholarship Fund for Startups, Small Businesses, and Nonprofits

Durango, CO (May 2, 2025) — The Durango Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce the launch of a new scholarship fund supporting startups, small businesses, and nonprofits facing financial hardship or just getting off the ground. Recipients will receive a one-year Build Partner membership – valued at $575 – providing access to essential Chamber resources, programs, and visibility to help them grow and integrate into the local business ecosystem.

The scholarship was made possible through a major investment from Sunward Federal Credit Union, which contributed $5,000 to launch the program, and an investment from CommonSpirit – Mercy Hospital, which provided a $2,500 gift to support expanded reach.

The initiative was championed by Josh Neff, Durango Chamber Board Member and CEO of CommonSpirit - Mercy Hospital, who emphasized the importance of reaching smaller, often-overlooked organizations.

“Support for the business community has to include those with the most to gain—and the least capacity to invest up front,” said Neff. “Startups and nonprofits are essential to a vibrant economy. This scholarship connects them to the Chamber's full suite of support so they’re not left behind.”

For Sunward Federal Credit Union, investing in the Chamber through its new scholarship fund represents an investment in the entirety of Durango’s thriving small business community. Sunward has a long history of supporting ambitious entrepreneurs and growing small businesses and nonprofits by building deep relationships and by providing personalized, tailored financial services.

“At Sunward, we know small businesses are the foundation of Durango’s vibrant community,” said Hill Martinez-Uribe, Sunward’s Durango Branch Manager. “We also know how critical direct support is for small businesses and nonprofit organizations to succeed. As we build new relationships in Durango, we're proud to help make access to the Chamber more inclusive for businesses and nonprofits that need a lift.”

Sunward will celebrate the grand opening of its Durango branch, located at 22 Town Plaza, on Friday, May 30, at noon. The Chamber encourages the community to attend and help welcome one of its new strategic partners.

The Chamber’s new scholarship program isn’t just a one-time membership. Businesses that receive the scholarship are expected to meet participation benchmarks, such as event attendance and media engagement, to be eligible for a second year of support. This built-in accountability helps deepen long-term relationships and impact.

“We have an engaged business community,” said Jeff Dupont, CEO of the Durango Chamber. “The Chamber creates awareness and credibility for organizations trying to find their footing in Durango. When margins are tight, a Chamber membership can feel like a discretionary expense. This scholarship gives us the opportunity to show our value, build relationships, and help these smaller businesses grow, strengthening the entire ecosystem.”

Applications for the scholarship are now open and will be reviewed quarterly by the Chamber’s Membership Committee. Eligible applicants must operate in La Plata County, have fewer than 25 employees, demonstrate financial need, and commit to engaging in Chamber programs and events.
